Free to a good home': Desperate Chinese father tries to give away his TRIPLETS at the roadside because he can't afford them
A father who reportedly tried to give away his triplet sons on the street has been arrested by police in central China.
Desperate
Xu Lin - who already has two sons aged five and six - set up a roadside
stall in Dengfeng, Henan province, where he allegedly offered the
babies 'free to a good home.'
The
youngsters - said to be aged 11 months - were wrapped in quilts and
blankets and placed on mats while their father tried to give them to
passing strangers.
Xu reportedly said: 'I love my sons but either they go or the whole family goes.'
One
witness added: 'He said they were healthy and fit, but he and his wife
just couldn't afford to keep them. They had been hoping for one
daughter.'
Passersby called police believing Xu
was a child trafficker. He was arrested and the children taken into care
with the city authorities.
A
police spokesman said: 'He said his family are at breaking point
because they cannot afford three more children. This suspect's case is
being considered.'
China's 'one child' law is frequently flouted outside major cities where parents can pay a fine if they have more than one baby.
State
news agency Xinhua has said the country will look to relax the law
which has been in place since 1978 to allow couples to have a second
child if either parent is the only child by the end of this year.
The
government says the policy has prevented an additional 400 million
births in the world's most populous country of 1.3 billion. China's
population is estimated to hit 1.4 billion by 2020.
